about

This is the final track recorded for my "Ukulele Forms" project, in May 2023. The aim was to create an English flavour but without any obvious use of folksong, or Elgar/Vaughan Williams type idioms - but there may be a hint of Benjamin Britten.
The title is a reference to Thomas Hardy and it's inspired by scenes in Dorset which he would have recognised.
The piece began with an improvisation on acoustic ukulele which I've left intact. I then added "orchestration" by playing 10 parts on the same Flight Voyager uke through a Boss SY1000 guitar synth. This has a slightly distorted "analogue synth" character but livened up by the touch sensitive/string bending ukulele source. In places it sounds almost (but not quite) like piccolo, sitar, Wurlitzer piano, Moog, etc.
