about

On July 30 1960, “things got out of hand” at the Beaulieu jazz festival. One of the UK’s earliest outdoor music events became The ‘Battle of Beaulieu’ involving 20 ambulances, destruction of the stage and setting fire to a building. It was described by the press as "a jazz riot". This was a surprise in the conservative Britain of the time, signalling the social unrest of the 1960s, juvenile delinquency and rivalry between trad jazz fans (Acker Bilk was playing when violence erupted) and modernists - allegedly stirred up by hooligans from Southampton and Portsmouth and fueled by copious alcohol consumption.
The piece is influenced by UK jazz composers like Mike Westbrook and Keith Tippett. Alongside the rhythm section it features four pairs of instruments; clarinet and flute, alto and tenor saxes, Hammond organ and Mellotron, guitar and ukulele; there is lots of "call and response" between these sections.
Thanks to Cheryl Ashman, clarinet and tenor sax and Joanna Dazeley, flute and alto sax - the other instruments are played by me.
